M8 closed in Edinburgh as overturned lorry and crash cause traffic chaos

The M8 has been closed to traffic after a lorry overturned on the westbound carriageway.

This comes around an hour after the eastbound section was closed at the same stretch due to a separate crash involving two vehicles. Both incidents happened between junction two at the M9 interchange and junction one at Hermiston Gait.

The eastbound incident has been cleared, and the route reopened, although lengthy queues[1] remain with delays of at least 25 minutes. This section of road was reopened at around 2.15pm – around half an hour after the crash happened.

Traffic Scotland confirmed news of the westbound accident – in which a lorry is said to have overturned – at around 2.30pm The road was closed at around 2.50pm, with emergency services and recovery teams currently on the scene.

Police are currently at the scene assisting with the road closure.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland[3] said: “We received a report of a lorry overturned on the M8 Westbound near Junction 2.

“Officers are in attendance and there are no reports of injuries. The road[4] is currently closed.”
