A shortage of truck drivers is becoming a huge problem that officials say will have an affect on all of us.
“As long as we do not have enough trucks and truck drivers to take those trucks to their destination,” said Omid Bagheri, Assistant Professor of Economics at Kent State University. “There will be some decrease in the supply of all goods, including fuel,” he said.
A decrease in supplies will start to trickle over into other things, which could mean food.
“That can affect the cost of transportation to go up and that as a second result, can even more increase the price of other goods,” Bagheri said.
The age group that was traditionally behind the wheel of these trucks, just aren’t doing it anymore. Officials say advertisement for the job can only go so far.
“Most of the over the road jobs the older people, the boomers like my age, they’re doing the local stuff,” said Jim Buttermore, Director at the New Castle School of Trades. “It’s not a..it’s not what young people are pushed towards,” he said.
Buttermore tells 21 News, they’re advertising truck driver positions online and on television that’ll bring people in. Bagheri says gas prices will continue to increase, if nothing is done to rectify this situation.
