Train arrives on Tom Cruise Mission: Impossible set in Derbyshire

Things appear to be heating up at the Mission: Impossible 7 set in Derbyshire, which has brought all eyes onto a small village in recent months.

The disused Darlton Quarry, in Stoney Middleton[1], is set to be the backdrop for one of action blockbuster’s signature stunts involving a train.

And, after weeks of speculation[2], the train itself has finally arrived on site, joining a section of railway constructed at the top of the quarry overlooking a vertical drop.

From the top of the quarry, in Middleton Lane, which appears to be the main entrance to the set, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was business as usual.

As has been the case for the last few weeks, all is quiet up there apart from the occasional security guard patrolling the site.

The railway which has become commonplace in the village appears to be all but built, hanging out into the quarry to be seen from various vantage points around Stoney Middleton and Eyam.

However, as you can see from across the valley, it’s at the foot of the quarry where most of the activity seems to be.

From Edge Road, Eyam, you can see into the bottom of the quarry with a pair of binoculars or a decent camera lens, where the train, that has been seen in Yorkshire as part of the filming taking place there, is now sitting.

Middleton Lane was closed over the weekend from Friday, May 28 to “facilitate the movement of heavy freight”, and it was later on that the train was seen arriving at the site on the back of a lorry.

Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell were pictured in Yorkshire filming a stunt where the two were hanging from the side of the moving train.

It is widely expected that it is the explosive conclusion of this scene that is being shot in Derbyshire.

One resident, who was walking by when the locomotive arrived along The Dale, spoke of the buzz she felt when seeing the long-awaited arrival.

She said: “It’s very exciting, it looks like things are going to start happening very soon.

“I didn’t envy them trying to get it in on the narrow roads, driving a car can be difficult sometimes around here, let alone a train.”

Shooting is set to begin soon at Darlton Quarry

From the spot across the valley, you can also see that part of the quarry is filled with water, likely to catch the train when it inevitably falls from the track above.

However, it is unclear at this stage how the heavy freight will be moved from the foot of the quarry to assume its position on the railway at the top.

Documents from Derbyshire County Council state that more road closures are on the way between June 5 and June 26, in both Moisty Lane and Middleton Lane.

Based on information from the planning documents submitted to the Peak District National Park Authority, these will be to accommodate both rehearsals and two days of shooting.
