Lorry destroyed in intense fire seen around Plymouth

A huge fire which saw huge plummets of black smoke billow into the sky in North Prospect began in a lorry.

Fire crews were called to Drace Drive just after noon on Friday, June 11 after the blaze broke out in the residential area.

Pictures and video from the scene show at least two fire engines tackled the fire, which was started accidentally.

Watch manager Dan Morgan told PlymouthLive: “We were called to a report of a vehicle on fire. On arrival, we found a heavy goods vehicle with a crew cab well alight carrying insulating boards.

“Crews from Camels Head and Crown Hill attended the fire which we dealt with using breathing apparatus and hose reels to contain and control the fire and eventually put it out.

“The fire took 10-15 minutes to deal with properly but then we had to make sure the fire was out properly.”

A fire service spokesperson said: “Crews from Camels Head and Crownhill attended a lorry fire where the cab of the lorry was severely damaged by fire. Crews extinguished the fire using two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, and one short extension ladder.

“The cause of the fire was accidental.”

An eyewitness told PlymouthLive: “It started at 12:15pm and lasted about five minutes before the fire was put out.”
