Pick-up truck 'driven erratically' slams into lamppost on busy Plymouth hill

Investigators are keen to hear from anyone who saw a large blue pick-up being driven erratically through Devonport on Monday evening. It is believed the vehicle was first spotted in the Albert Road area on Monday and witnesses who were concerned about the quality of the driving called police. Plymouth City Council’s CCTV operators then began to track the large vehicle as it continued eastwards along Park Avenue and Chapel Street, then Cumberland Road and Devonport Hill.

It is believed the vehicle was heading towards the city centre. However, at around 8.30pm the vehicle collided with lamppost in Devonport Hill, damaging it and the leaving the driver suffering head injuries after he struck the inside of the vehicle. A 42-year-old man from Bude was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit and initially taken to Derriford Hospital for treatment before being taken to Charles Cross police station for interview.

Police have said the man is set to be released under investigation and inquiries will continue while blood samples taken at the hospital are examined.

Investigators say they are very keen to hear from anyone who was in the Devonport area between 8pm and 8.30pm and saw the large blue pick-up truck being driven in an unsafe manner or who witnessed the truck’s collision with the lamppost.
