Two farmers have been killed when their farming truck collided with a freight train at an outback rail crossing.

The men died at the scene near Eurabba Lane in Bribbaree, in western NSW, about 5.15pm on Tuesday, with the wreck pushed along the train line.

Police rushed to the scene but found the men were already dead.

They established a crime scene and are investigating how the accident happened.

'On arrival we found a truck carrying some farm produce had collided with the side of a fright train... and it was (then) pushed down the side of the railway line,' NSW Police Inspector Jacob Reeves told 9News.

Police said initial inquiries showed the truck driver and his passenger were trying to cross the railway line at the time of the crash.

The train line between Stockinbingal and Quandialla was closed until 7am on Wednesday.

The men are yet to be formally identified, with a report to be prepared for the coroner.
